Fiscal Union, Social Europe: Synergies and Tensions

The YSI Political Economy of Europe Working Group invites young scholars to partake in a Research Seminar aiming to investigate the interplay between fiscal policy in the European Union and domestic social policies of its member states. 

Call for Papers

The Working Group on European Political Economy of the Young Scholars Initiative of INET is pleased to announce the opening of the Call for Papers for its fourth Research Seminar, to be held in Brussels on the 13th and 14th of April 2017. This Research Seminar is kindly hosted by Bruegel, the leading European Think Tank on Economic Policy. 

The Research Seminar, titled “Fiscal Union, Social Europe: Synergies and Tensions”, aims to investigate the interplay between EU-wide fiscal policy and domestic social policies. Presenters of the selected papers will receive accommodation and, if possible, travel funding. The Working Group board will select up to 16 papers dealing with the topic from an economic, political, institutional point of view. We welcome theoretical, empirical and policy papers; further details on the topic of each single panel are provided in the preliminary programme of the event enclosed to this email. The selected presenters will have their stay in Brussels covered by the Working Group funding. In addition, 8 more scholarships will be awarded to working group members to attend the Research Seminar. The last sessions of the Seminar will be dedicated to a training session the synthetic control method given by prof. Marco Percoco of Bocconi University. 

The call is open to PhD. Students, Post-doctoral fellows and academic staff in the early stages of their career, including associate professors aged below 40. Policy-makers and practitioners, as well as excellent Master students with research-oriented interests, are also invited to apply.

In order to apply, please send a 350-words abstract and a short statement of interests to f.nicoli@uva.nl by March 7th, 2017. The proposals awarded with funding will be announced by March 13th, 2017.  Continuous participation in the working group activities, or stated interest to become part of the working group, is an element taken into account in the assessment of the proposals.
